When a car enthusiast who sees his entire world beneath the bonnet meets a dreamer who finds whole little worlds in everything, the only logical outcome is buying a classic car, sooner or later.

From the very beginning, we knew exactly what we were looking for. For one of us, the Beetle holds some truly precious memories. It was a big part of an entire childhood, with countless hours spent tinkering with it alongside his dad and uncle. For the other, the Beetle had always been the only car that truly appealed to her, thanks to its character and the nostalgia it evokes.

When we finally found our Beetle, all that was left was to get her home. How we actually managed that is still something of a mystery to us. We kept stopping to fix this and adjust that — the engine, the lights, even the brakes… At one point, we started wondering how many times you can stop before it no longer counts as driving. We quickly learned that unexpected situations aren’t a reason to get frustrated, but often the beginning of the best stories.

Our Beetle has been with us for six years now. She’s our little escape from everyday life, a kind of switch that lets us leave everything else behind the moment we climb inside. In a Beetle, even a trip to the shops becomes an adventure, let alone a longer drive. We love her gentle rattling, the sound of the engine, the breeze coming through the windows, and the simple fact that there’s no need to rush anywhere — nor is there much chance of it anyway.

What we love most is simply getting in and setting off, without much of a plan or any particular reason. Passers-by wave at us, and we wave right back. We honestly couldn’t say which we enjoy more: the sparkle in children’s eyes as they point their tiny fingers at the little blue car and leave their fingerprints all over the pop-out quarter windows, or the beaming faces of grandparents whose lips curl into a very special kind of smile when they see her.

The Beetle wins over young and old alike. She leaves no one indifferent and brings together people who, at first glance, might have very little in common.

And so, quite without trying, our Beetle has become our greatest ally — one we plan to keep driving into our very own little world for many years to come.
